Dr. Simopoulos grew up in Falls Church, Virginia. He majored in religious studies at the University of Virginia, with a focus in biomedical ethics, and went on to attend medical school at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He subspecialized in urologic surgery for two years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before finding his true calling in psychiatry. He returned to the George Washington University, where the faculty chose him to serve as Chief Resident. Upon finishing his psychiatry training in Washington, he returned to Charlottesville and completed his fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Virginia.

Today, Dr. Simopoulos draws on a rich and varied background to care for his patients. He believes medication and therapy work best together, and he blends thoughtful prescribing with a range of therapy approaches to find what truly helps each person he sees.

Approach

Dr. Simopoulos considers it a privilege to care for every patient he meets, and he brings warmth, compassion, and genuine understanding to each visit. During his residency and fellowship, he developed a special interest in helping people facing mental health challenges while hospitalized for medical conditions, those working through spiritual or existential questions at any stage of life, and individuals in the justice system who need mental health support. Along the way, he’s had the chance to learn from and work alongside respected psychiatrists and psychologists, and he has shared his work at conferences and in publications throughout Virginia, Washington, D.C., and around the world.

Diverse Practices

Dr. Simopoulos completed his Forensic Psychiatry fellowship at the University of Virginia, the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy (ILPPP), and Western State Psychiatric Hospital, so he brings deep experience to both criminal and civil forensic assessments. He served as a visiting Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia, and for twelve years he was the Forensic Medical Director and forensic unit psychiatrist at Western State Psychiatric Hospital. He also led mental health services as Director at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Dr. Simopoulos welcomes inquiries for forensic consultations, formal evaluations, and speaking engagements, and he’d be glad to hear from you.
